The xx are a British indie rock band known for their minimalist sound, blending indie rock, electronic, and dream pop. After posting demos on Myspace and attracting the attention of Beggars Group-owned label Young Turks, British indie rock band The xx released their critically acclaimed debut album ‘xx’ on August 14, 2009. Formed in 2005, the band comprises Romy Madley Croft (guitar, vocals), Oliver Sim (bass guitar, vocals), and Jamie Smith, also known as Jamie xx (beats, MPC, record production). Initially including Baria Qureshi on keyboard and guitar who departed after the debut, The xx developed a distinctive minimalist sound blending indie rock, electronic, and dream pop, characterized by soft echoed guitar, prominent bass, light electronic beats, and ambient soundscapes, with a dual-vocalist setup.
Beyond their collective work, members of The xx have also pursued notable individual projects. Oliver Sim released his critically acclaimed debut solo album ‘Hideous Bastard’ in 2022, and Romy Madley Croft followed with her debut solo album ‘Mid Air’ in 2023. Demonstrating ongoing creative momentum, The xx confirmed in early 2024 that they are actively engaged in the production of their eagerly awaited fourth studio album.
