About

Ernest Joseph “Trey” Anastasio III was born on September 30, 1964, in Fort Worth, Texas, and grew up in Princeton, New Jersey. His early musical experiences included playing drums and collaborating with his mother, an editor for Sesame Street Magazine, on stories and songs. He attended Princeton Day School and later Taft, where he transitioned from vocalist to guitarist in bands like Red Tide and Space Antelope. Anastasio initially enrolled at the University of Vermont (UVM) as a philosophy major, also hosting a radio show called “Ambient Alarm Clock.” While at UVM, he met Jon Fishman, Jeff Holdsworth, and Mike Gordon, forming the band Phish. The band members later transferred to Goddard College, where Page McConnell joined on keyboards.

Phish grew into a significant touring act, with reported gross earnings of $10.3 million from concerts in 1994, $16 million from 80 U.S. shows in 1995, and $17 million from 49 shows in 1996. By 1997, Phish played 44 U.S. shows, selling over 800,000 tickets and grossing more than $21 million. In 1998, the band grossed $23.3 million, ranking 23rd for top concert tours in North America. Beyond Phish, Anastasio developed a rich solo career and engaged in collaborations. He studied composition, theory, and arranging with Ernie Stires at Goddard College, where he also composed the song cycle “The Man Who Stepped into Yesterday” for his senior project.

His career includes notable collaborations with artists such as Dave Matthews, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, and The Roots. Anastasio has performed his compositions with orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and National Symphony Orchestra. In 2013, he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Original Score for the Broadway musical “Hands on a Hardbody” and received the Dramatists Guild Frederick Loewe Award. In 2023, Rolling Stone recognized Anastasio as number 53 on their list of the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, further solidifying his contributions to music.
