About

Usher Raymond IV was born in Dallas, Texas, on October 14, 1978. He began singing at age six in his local church choir, encouraged by his mother, Jonetta Patton, who later became his manager. At 12, after relocating to Atlanta, Georgia, Usher joined a local R&B group called NuBeginning. In 1993, he was discovered at a talent show by Bryant Reid, leading to an audition with LaFace Records co-founder L.A. Reid, who signed him at 13. His self-titled debut album was released in 1994. After graduating from high school, Usher released his sophomore album, “My Way,” in 1997. This album featured his first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, “Nice & Slow,” and the successful track “You Make Me Wanna…”. He earned a Grammy nomination for “You Make Me Wanna…” and won the 1997 Soul Train Award for Best R&B Single by a Male.

Usher’s career progressed with his third album, “8701” (2001), which included the US number-one singles “U Remind Me” and “U Got It Bad.” He won consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance in 2002 and 2003. His fourth album, “Confessions” (2004), was a major commercial success, selling over one million copies in its first week and eventually more than 20 million worldwide, earning a diamond certification from the RIAA. This album produced four consecutive US number-one singles: “Yeah!”, “Burn”, “Confessions Part II”, and “My Boo.” Usher was named Billboard’s second most successful artist of the decade and the number-one Hot 100 artist of the decade. He co-founded Raymond-Braun Media Group (RBMG) in 2008 with Scooter Braun to manage Justin Bieber’s career. His sixth album, “Raymond v. Raymond” (2010), featured his ninth number-one single, “OMG,” making him one of the few artists to top the Billboard Hot 100 in three consecutive decades. He served as a coach on “The Voice” from 2013-2014, with his last act winning the sixth season. His Super Bowl LVIII halftime show in 2024 drew 123 million viewers in the US. Usher has sold over 100 million records worldwide and has received numerous accolades, including 8 Grammy Awards and induction into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2021.

Beyond music, Usher has an extensive acting career, including roles in films such as “The Faculty” (1998), “She’s All That” (1999), and “Hands of Stone” (2016), where he portrayed Sugar Ray Leonard. He also appeared on Broadway in “Chicago” in 2006. In addition to his entertainment career, Usher is a businessman and philanthropist. He owns a stake in the Cleveland Cavaliers NBA team and founded the non-profit charity organization Usher’s New Look in 1999, which focuses on youth education and real-world experience. He has engaged in various partnerships, including with Tommy Hilfiger, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Belvedere Vodka, Samsung, and Ralph Lauren Fragrances, demonstrating his appeal across different industries. He recently released his ninth studio album, “Coming Home,” in February 2024.
