James Gabriel Keogh, known professionally as Vance Joy, was born on December 1, 1987, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. His early life included attending St. Patrick’s Primary School and graduating from St Kevin’s College in 2005. He further pursued higher education at Monash University, earning a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws. Before committing to his music career, Joy was an Australian rules football player, playing for the Coburg Football Club in the Victorian Football League in 2008 and 2009. He received the best first-year player award in 2008, demonstrating his abilities in sports before his pivot to music.
Joy’s music career began to take shape with the release of his debut single “From Afar” on January 21, 2013, followed by his debut EP “God Loves You When You’re Dancing” in March 2013. The EP featured the song “Riptide,” which became a major commercial success, peaking at number 6 on the ARIA Singles Chart and achieving nine-times platinum certification by the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA). “Riptide” also gained international exposure through a GoPro TV advertising campaign in the USA and became the longest-charting song in ARIA Charts’ history. His debut studio album, “Dream Your Life Away,” was released in September 2014, earning him the Best Male Artist award at the AR ARIA Music Awards of 2015. He continued to build his career by supporting Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour in 2015.
His second studio album, “Nation of Two,” released in February 2018, debuted at number 1 in Australia, achieved gold certification, and secured the Best Adult Contemporary Album award at the ARIA Music Awards of 2018.
