Boureima “Vieux” Farka Touré is a celebrated Malian singer, composer, and guitarist, renowned for his unique blend of traditional Malian music and contemporary influences. Born in Niafunké, Mali, he is the son of the legendary musician Ali Farka Touré. Despite initial discouragement from his father, Vieux pursued his passion for music, secretly learning the guitar while studying at the Institut National des Arts in Bamako. His debut album, released in 2007, featured collaborations with his father and prominent musicians, marking a significant entry into the world music scene.
Following his debut, Vieux’s second album, Fondo, released in 2009, showcased his evolution as an artist, incorporating elements of rock and Latin music while maintaining his roots in traditional Malian sounds. The album achieved critical acclaim, peaking at #5 on Billboard’s World Albums chart. His performance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup opening celebration further solidified his status as a global artist, captivating audiences with his energetic live shows and exceptional guitar skills.
In 2011, Vieux released The Secret, which featured collaborations with renowned artists and reached the number-one spot on CMJ’s New World chart. His subsequent albums, including Mon Pays and Samba, continued to explore themes of cultural identity and resilience, particularly in the context of Mali’s socio-political challenges. Vieux’s music serves as a powerful reminder of his homeland’s beauty and cultural richness.
Vieux’s recent projects, including the album Les Racines and the collaborative work Ali with Khruangbin, have garnered international acclaim, showcasing his ability to innovate while honoring his father’s legacy. As a passionate advocate for humanitarian efforts in Mali, Vieux founded Amahrec Sahel and directs The Ali Farka Touré Foundation, ensuring the preservation of his father’s cultural impact and supporting the next generation of musicians in Mali.
