Zee Avi

Zee Avi, born Izyan Alirahman, is a captivating Malaysian singer-songwriter and guitarist whose enchanting melodies have entranced audiences worldwide. Hailing from Miri, Sarawak, Malaysia, nestled on the island of Borneo, Zee’s musical journey began at the age of 12 when she relocated to Kuala Lumpur. It was there, at 17, that she discovered her passion for the guitar, teaching herself to play and immersing herself in the vibrant music scene of the Malaysian capital.

After a stint playing rhythm guitar in local bands, Zee Avi ventured to London to pursue studies in fashion design at the American InterContinental University. However, it was her return to Malaysia that marked the genesis of her musical career, as she delved into songwriting and began crafting her unique sound.

Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of musical influences, ranging from swing bands and Gershwin to contemporary artists like Cat Power and Regina Spektor, Zee Avi’s music defies genre boundaries, encompassing indie rock, pop rock, jazz, folk, and beyond. Her hauntingly beautiful voice has earned her comparisons to jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald, while her rock sensibilities infuse her music with a modern edge.

Zee Avi’s self-titled debut album, released in 2009, garnered critical acclaim and earned her a place among the top names in music, recognized by the Associated Press as one of the Top 10 Albums of the year. Her accolades continued with nominations for the Break Out Award and Pop Star Award at the 2010 Shout! Awards in Malaysia.
