Aaron Cruden was born on January 8, 1989, in Palmerston North, Manawatu, New Zealand. He attended Palmerston North Boys’ High School, where he captained the First XV in 2006, a team that won 19 of 22 games and secured the Super 8 title. His early career was marked by a significant challenge when he was diagnosed with testicular cancer at 19 in 2008, undergoing chemotherapy and surgery. Remarkably, by 2009, he was in remission and captained the New Zealand Under 20s, leading them to the IRB Junior World Championships title and earning the IRB World Junior Player of the Year award.
Cruden made his provincial debut for Manawatu in 2008 and his Super Rugby debut for the Hurricanes in 2010. He joined the Chiefs in 2012, a move that coincided with a peak in his career. He captained the Chiefs to their first two Super Rugby titles in 2012 and 2013, starting all 36 games during that period and scoring 353 points. His international career saw him debut for the All Blacks in 2010, and he was famously called into the 2011 Rugby World Cup squad as a replacement, playing a crucial role in New Zealand’s victory, including starting the final.
