Abe Wiersma

Olympic Gold medalist and World Champion Abe Wiersma has built an illustrious career in competitive rowing, making his mark early with consecutive bronze medals at the World Rowing U23 Championships in the double scull in both 2015 and 2016. These achievements followed his debut representing the Netherlands at the Junior World Rowing Championships in the quad scull in 2011, continuing through 2012, and further participation in the World Rowing U23 Championships from 2014 to 2016. Wiersma advanced to his senior international debut in 2017, earning a pivotal seat in the Dutch men’s quad scull alongside Koen Metsemakers. That year, the crew competed across three World Rowing Cups, the European Championships, and secured a notable fourth-place finish at the 2017 World Rowing Championships in Sarasota, Florida.

During this monumental achievement, Wiersma and his crew also set a new world’s best time for the event, solidifying their place in rowing history. Following his Olympic triumph, Wiersma continued to compete at an elite level. In 2022, he transitioned to the Dutch men’s Eight, where he immediately contributed to the team’s success. He earned a silver medal at the 2022 European Rowing Championships, followed by another silver medal at the 2022 World Rowing Championships, further cementing his reputation as a versatile and enduring force in international rowing.
