Abe Wiersma

Abe Wiersma was born on August 14, 1994, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. He began his international rowing career representing the Netherlands in 2011 at the Junior World Rowing Championships, competing in the quad scull. He continued to compete at the junior level in 2012. From 2014 to 2016, Wiersma participated in the World Rowing U23 Championships, earning bronze medals in the double scull in both 2015 and 2016. These early experiences established his presence in competitive rowing on an international stage.

Wiersma made his senior international debut in 2017, securing a seat in the Dutch men’s quad scull alongside Koen Metsemakers. The crew competed in three World Rowing Cups, the European Championships, and the 2017 World Rowing Championships in Sarasota, Florida, where they achieved a fourth-place finish. He maintained his position in the quad scull through 2018, competing in multiple World Rowing Cups and the 2018 European and World Rowing Championships. His consistent performance contributed to the team’s ongoing development and competitiveness.

In 2019, with the addition of Tone Wieten to the crew, the Dutch quad scull experienced significant success. They won gold at the European Championships and a bronze at World Rowing Cup III. The highlight of the season was winning the gold medal at the 2019 World Rowing Championships in Linz-Ottensheim, securing Wiersma his first World Championship title. The crew continued their success into 2020 by winning the European Championships. In 2021, leading up to the Tokyo Olympics, the team earned a silver medal at the European Championships and a gold medal at World Rowing Cup II, culminating in an Olympic gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games in the men’s quadruple sculls, where they also set a new world’s best time for the event.
