Adam Clark Curry was born on September 3, 1964, in Arlington, Virginia. He spent his formative years in Amstelveen, Netherlands, from 1972 to 1987, where he began his broadcasting career in Dutch pirate radio with stations like Radio Picasso and Radio Decibel under the pseudonym “John Holden.” His early success in the Netherlands included hosting the weekly pop-music television program *Countdown* and its English counterpart for the pan-European channel Music Box, as well as various radio and television programs for the Dutch broadcaster Veronica, including the popular Curry and Van Inkel radioshow.
In 1987, Curry transitioned to MTV as a VJ, where he gained international recognition. During his tenure at MTV, he hosted *Headbangers Ball* and *MTV Top 20 Video Countdown*, interviewing prominent figures such as Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. Concurrently, he engaged in radio work in the United States, serving as a drive-time host for New York City’s WHTZ and hosting the national program *HitLine USA*. In 1993, recognizing the emerging potential of the internet, Curry registered the domain name “mtv.com” with the intention of creating an unofficial online presence for MTV. This initiative marked an early embrace of digital media, foreshadowing his later contributions to the internet and podcasting.
Following his time at MTV, Curry founded OnRamp Inc., a web-portal design and hosting company that grew to 4,000 employees. This company was eventually sold to Think New Ideas Inc., a firm he co-founded, where he served as chief technology officer. Think New Ideas Inc. had an initial public offering on NASDAQ in 1996 and expanded to employ over 7,400 people across seven countries before merging with Answerthink Inc. In 2004, Curry co-founded PodShow with Ron Bloom, a venture that later became Mevio, a podcast promotions and advertising company. His efforts in developing podcasting technology and promoting the medium led to him being widely known as “the Podfather.” He also established Podcast Index in 2020, an open-source database of podcasts, further solidifying his legacy in digital audio media.
