About

Born on May 7, 1993, in Zagreb, Croatia, Ajla Tomljanovic began her tennis journey at the age of six. Showing early promise, she moved to Florida at 13 for advanced training at the Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton. Her junior career highlights include winning the 2009 Australian Open girls’ doubles title with Christina McHale. Tomljanovic turned professional in December 2009. She initially represented Croatia, but after obtaining permanent residency in Australia in 2014, she began competing for Australia in Grand Slam events. By January 2018, she gained Australian citizenship, allowing her to represent the country in all WTA Tour events and the Fed Cup. Throughout her career, she has secured numerous achievements, including four singles and three doubles titles on the ITF Women’s Circuit, demonstrating consistent performance in her sport.

Tomljanovic reached her maiden WTA Tour final in 2015 at the Pattaya Open and would go on to compete in five WTA singles finals. A significant turning point in her career came in 2016 when she underwent shoulder surgery, sidelining her for the remainder of the season. Her resilience was evident in her return to competitive play in 2017, and by 2018, she reached two WTA Tour finals. The 2021 season marked a career milestone with her first major quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon. She continued this success in 2022, reaching back-to-back quarterfinals at Wimbledon and the US Open, where she famously defeated Serena Williams in what was Williams’ final professional singles match. In 2023, despite a knee injury, she achieved a career-high singles ranking of No. 32 and won her first WTA 125 title in Florianópolis.

In 2024, after recovering from surgery to remove fibroids, Tomljanovic made a strong comeback, reaching her first tour-level final in five years at the Birmingham Classic and securing her second WTA 125 title at the Hong Kong 125 Open. She represented Australia at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris in both singles and doubles events. Her consistent performance and dedication have positioned her as a prominent figure in professional tennis, continuously challenging top-ranked players and achieving significant milestones despite facing physical setbacks. She ended 2024 as world No. 85, marking a substantial climb in the singles ranking.
