About

Alan Cedric Page was born on August 7, 1945, in Canton, Ohio. His childhood emphasized the importance of education, a principle that guided his diverse career. Page excelled in football at Canton Central Catholic High School and continued his collegiate career at the University of Notre Dame, where he was a consensus All-American in 1966 and led the Fighting Irish to a national championship. His talent led him to be the 15th overall pick in the first round of the 1967 NFL/AFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings.

Page played defensive tackle for the Minnesota Vikings for 11 seasons (1967-1977) and then for the Chicago Bears for four seasons (1978-1981). During his 15-year professional career, he played in 218 consecutive games and earned numerous accolades, including the NFL Most Valuable Player award in 1971, making him the first defensive player to receive this honor. He was also named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1971 and 1973, was a nine-time Pro Bowl selection, and a member of both the College Football Hall of Fame (1993) and the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1988). Beyond the field, he earned a B.A. from the University of Notre Dame in 1967 and a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1978, balancing law studies with his demanding football career.

Following his retirement from professional football, Page embarked on a legal career. He served as Special Assistant Attorney General and later as Assistant Attorney General in 1985. In 1992, he was elected as an associate justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court, becoming the first African-American to hold this position. He served on the court until his mandatory retirement in 2015. Throughout his legal career and retirement, Page has remained a prominent advocate for education, co-founding the Page Education Foundation in 1988, which provides financial and mentoring assistance to students of color. His remarkable journey was recognized in 2018 when he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
