Alejandro Balde Martínez, born on October 18, 2003, in Barcelona, Spain, began his football journey at a young age. He joined FC Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy in 2011 at the age of eight, having previously spent time at Espanyol. Balde quickly rose through the youth ranks, consistently playing a year above his age group. He achieved league titles across various youth categories, including U10 A, B, and C, U12 A and C, U14 A and B, and A16 A and B levels, before progressing to the Barça Atlètic squad. His commitment to the club was solidified in July 2021 when he signed a contract renewal with Barcelona, featuring a release clause of 500 million euros, highlighting the club’s belief in his potential.
Balde made his first-team debut for Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on September 14, 2021, coming on for an injured Jordi Alba against Bayern Munich. The following season, 2022/23, marked a significant turning point as he established himself as the primary left-back under coach Xavi Hernández. This period saw him contribute to Barcelona’s success, winning both the La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup. In the summer of 2023, he officially became a first-team player, further cementing his role within the squad. His impressive performances led to a call-up to the Spanish national team for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he made his international debut and played four matches. In September 2023, Balde signed an extended contract with Barcelona until 2028, with a buyout clause set at an impressive €1 billion.
Despite an injury in January 2024 against Athletic Club which ended his 2023/24 season prematurely after 28 appearances, Balde recovered to start the 2024/25 campaign strong. He made 47 official appearances, scoring once and providing eight assists, and reached his 100th official appearance for the first team in December 2024. He also scored his first El Clásico goal in the 2025 Supercopa de España final, contributing to a 5-2 victory. Balde’s career highlights include winning La Liga twice (2022–23, 2024–25), the Copa del Rey (2024–25), and the Supercopa de España twice (2023, 2025). His consistent form has earned him individual accolades such as being named in the La Liga Team of the Season for 2022–23 and the IFFHS Men’s World Youth (U20) Team in 2023.
