About

Alexander Caedmon Karp was born on October 2, 1967, in New York City. He is the eldest son of Robert Joseph Karp, a clinical pediatrician, and Leah Jaynes Karp, an artist. He spent his formative years in Philadelphia, alongside his younger brother, Oliver “Ben” Karp, and is an alumnus of Central High School, graduating in 1985. Karp has publicly shared that he faced challenges with dyslexia from an early age. His upbringing was significantly shaped by his parents’ involvement in civil rights and social justice activism, leading him to participate in various protests during his youth. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from Haverford College, obtained in 1989. Subsequently, he pursued legal studies at Stanford Law School, earning a Juris Doctor (J.D.) in 1992. It was during his time at Stanford that he established a connection with Peter Thiel, a future business partner. Further expanding his academic credentials, Karp completed a Ph.D. in neoclassical social theory from Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany in 2002. His doctoral thesis was titled “Aggression in der Lebenswelt: Die Erweiterung des Parsonsschen Konzepts der Aggression durch die Beschreibung des Zusammenhangs von Jargon, Aggression und Kultur.”

Karp started his career as a research associate at the Sigmund Freud Institute in Frankfurt. Following an inheritance from his grandfather, he invested in startups and stocks. His success in this area led him to establish Caedmon Group, a London-based money management firm, to manage investments for high-net-worth clients. In 2004, Karp co-founded Palantir Technologies with Peter Thiel and others, assuming the role of CEO. Under his leadership, Palantir went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2020 through a direct listing process. In 2020, The New York Times reported that Karp was the highest-paid CEO of a publicly traded company, with compensation valued at $1.1 billion. By 2024, his compensation, as reported by The New York Times, was nearly $6.8 billion, making him the highest-paid CEO of a publicly traded company in the United States. Also in 2024, The Economist recognized him as CEO of the Year. In 2025, Time magazine included him in the Time 100 list of the world’s most influential individuals, acknowledging him as a prominent figure in the technology sector.
