Alton Devon Mason, born on November 21, 1997, in Nebraska, is an American model, actor, and dancer. His early life was characterized by extensive travel, living in 11 European countries due to his father’s professional basketball career. This nomadic upbringing, coupled with his mother’s background as a former model, laid an early foundation for his dynamic career. At 17, Mason moved to Los Angeles to study dancing and acting at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, further developing his performance skills.
Mason’s career began to take shape in 2015 when he secured a position as a backup dancer for Diddy at the BET Awards through his godmother, choreographer Laurieann Gibson. This exposure led to his signing with a modeling agency. In 2016, he was discovered on Instagram and cast in Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 3 show at Madison Square Garden. This was a pivotal moment, despite initial financial challenges. His unique presence and individual style quickly gained attention, leading to his first show for Gucci in 2017 at Milan Fashion Week. In 2018, he made history as the first Black male model to walk for Chanel, personally selected by Karl Lagerfeld. Mason achieved significant accolades, being named GQ Australia’s Male Model of the Year in 2019 and winning Models.com’s Male Model of the Year five consecutive times. Forbes also recognized him in its ’30 Under 30′ list for Art & Style in 2021.
Beyond modeling, Mason has expanded his artistic endeavors. In 2020, he released his debut single “Gimme Gimme,” accompanied by a music video filmed in Lagos, Nigeria, which also served as a fundraiser for Nigerian communities. In 2022, he made his Hollywood acting debut portraying Little Richard in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic *Elvis*. Mason views these pursuits as interconnected, expressing ambitions to creative direct and launch his own fashion line, aiming to become “a house.” He has become a notable figure not just for his work, but also for inspiring younger models to embrace their individuality.
