Amanda Nunes is a Brazilian-American professional mixed martial artist recognized for her achievements as a former two-time UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion and former UFC Women’s Featherweight Champion. After securing a gold medal at the Pan American Jiu-Jitsu Championship in 2008, Amanda Nunes earned a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and a brown belt in Judo. She further claimed gold at the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship in 2009, followed by a NAGA World Championship in 2012 across both Lightweight and Absolute Divisions. Nunes made her professional mixed martial arts (MMA) debut on March 8, 2008, building an impressive 5-1 record with all victories coming by knockout.
In 2018, Nunes further cemented her legacy by moving up to the featherweight division and knocking out Cris Cyborg at UFC 232, becoming the first woman to hold two UFC championship belts simultaneously. She then set an unprecedented record as the only UFC fighter to defend titles in two different weight classes concurrently. Her dominant career saw her accumulate the most wins in UFC title fights amongst women, with 11 victories, and the most combined title defenses by a woman in UFC history, totaling eight. Nunes maintained her status as a two-division champion for years.
She temporarily retired from active competition in 2023, following a successful title defense against Irene Aldana at UFC 289. In April 2025, Amanda Nunes received the distinguished honor of being announced as a UFC Hall of Fame inductee, joining the Modern Wing as part of the Class of 2025. Just two months later, in June 2025, she announced her highly anticipated return to the UFC, signaling a new chapter for the decorated Brazilian-American professional mixed martial artist.
