Amber Iman was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and developed an early interest in theatre. She attended North Springs Charter High School of Arts and Sciences in Sandy Springs, Georgia, actively participating in theatre and studying dance at institutions such as Atlanta Ballet and Alliance Theatre Summer Camp. She furthered her education at Howard University, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theatre in 2008. Her early career involved regional theatre performances in Atlanta with companies like the Alliance Theatre and True Colors Theatre Company, in productions such as ‘Goodnight Moon’, ‘Into the Woods’, and ‘The Colored Museum’.
In 2012, after touring internationally as a background vocalist for Lauryn Hill, Iman moved to New York City. She made her Off-Broadway debut in June 2012 in ‘Rent’ at New World Stages. Her Broadway debut followed in 2013, portraying Nina Simone in ‘Soul Doctor,’ for which she received a Clive Barnes Award nomination. She continued her Broadway career in 2016 in ‘Shuffle Along,’ a musical that earned 10 Tony Award nominations. From 2017 to 2018, Iman took on the roles of Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds in the first national tour of ‘Hamilton.’ Her regional theatre work includes critically recognized performances such as Cheryl in ‘Stick Fly’ at Arena Stage and Huntington Theatre Company, and Aldonza in ‘Man of La Mancha’ with the Shakespeare Theatre Company, for which she received an Emery Battis Award for Acting Excellence.
Iman’s recent career highlights include her 2022 Webby-nominated one-woman show, ‘An Evening with Amber Iman,’ recorded by Audible. In 2024, she returned to Broadway in ‘Lempicka,’ originating the role of Rafaela, and received a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She reprised her role as Nadira in ‘Goddess’ Off-Broadway at The Public Theater in 2025. Beyond her performing career, Iman is a founding member of the Broadway Advocacy Coalition, an organization dedicated to fostering equity through arts and storytelling, and a founding member of Black Women on Broadway, which supports black women in theatre. She has also appeared on HBO’s ‘High Maintenance’ and produced award-winning short films, ‘Steve’ and ‘Blackberry Winter’.
