About

Andrew Ferguson Neil, born on May 21, 1949, in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, began his path in journalism after attending Paisley Grammar School and the University of Glasgow. He graduated in 1971 with an MA with honors in political economy and political science. Neil started his professional career briefly as a sports correspondent for the Paisley Daily Express before joining The Economist in 1973 as a correspondent, later becoming editor of the publication’s section on Britain. This early experience in analytical journalism laid the groundwork for his extensive career in media leadership.

Neil’s career significantly advanced when he was appointed editor of The Sunday Times by Rupert Murdoch in 1983, a position he held until 1994. During his editorship, he oversaw significant journalistic endeavors, including the revelation of details regarding Israel’s nuclear weapons program in 1986, which he considers his greatest scoop. He also supported the stationing of American cruise missiles in Britain and advocated for right-wing industrial policies while being liberal on social matters. His tenure at The Sunday Times was marked by a commitment to investigative journalism and a strong editorial voice on various political and social issues. Following his departure, he continued his media career, becoming a contributor to the Daily Mail and later editor-in-chief of Press Holdings Media Group, which included titles like The Scotsman and The Spectator.

Beyond print, Neil expanded his influence into broadcasting. In 1988, he became the founding chairman of Sky TV, playing a crucial role in its transformation into a four-channel network. He dedicated 25 years to the BBC, presenting prominent political programs such as This Week, Daily Politics, and Sunday Politics, where he became known for his incisive interviewing style. After leaving the BBC in 2020, he served as founding chairman of GB News, though his tenure was brief. He has since returned to Channel 4 to host a weekly politics show and, starting in May 2024, began hosting a daily show for Times Radio, continuing his role as a key political commentator and interviewer.
