Andrew Ng was born in London in 1976 to parents who immigrated from Hong Kong. He spent his early childhood in Hong Kong and later moved to Singapore, where he attended Raffles Institution. Displaying early mathematical talent, he won a Silver Medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad. He pursued higher education in the United States, earning an undergraduate degree with a triple major in computer science, statistics, and economics from Carnegie Mellon University in 1997. Following this, he completed a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1998, where he developed an early web-search engine for research papers. In 2002, he received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley, under the supervision of Michael I. Jordan, with his thesis focusing on reinforcement learning.
Ng joined Stanford University as an assistant professor in 2002, later becoming an associate professor and Director of the Stanford AI Lab (SAIL). His machine learning course (CS229) became one of the most popular on campus. In 2011, he co-founded Coursera, an online education platform that made high-quality courses, including his own, available to a global audience. This led to the modern massive open online course (MOOC) movement. He has taught millions of students through his online courses, significantly contributing to the democratization of AI education. From 2011 to 2012, Ng also founded and directed the Google Brain Deep Learning Project at Google, where his team achieved milestones such as a neural network that learned to recognize cats from YouTube videos.
In 2014, Ng became the Chief Scientist at Baidu, where he built and led the company’s Artificial Intelligence Group, working on advancements in facial recognition and AI chatbots like Melody. He departed Baidu in 2017 to launch DeepLearning.AI, an online platform dedicated to deep learning courses, and Landing AI, a company focused on providing AI-powered SaaS products to various industries. In 2018, he established the AI Fund, a $175-million investment fund to support AI startups. His contributions to the field have earned him numerous accolades, including being named to the Time100 AI list in 2023 for being one of the most influential AI persons in the world. In April 2024, Amazon appointed Ng to its board of directors, further solidifying his influence in the AI landscape.
