Anfernee Jennings was born on May 1, 1997, in Dadeville, Alabama. He attended Dadeville High School, where he excelled in football playing both defensive end and tight end. During his senior year in 2014, Jennings recorded 170 tackles, 14 sacks, and two forced fumbles, earning him first-team 4A All-State honors and the 4A Lineman of the Year award. He committed to play college football at the University of Alabama, where he redshirted his true freshman season in 2015 while transitioning to outside linebacker. Over his college career, Jennings became a key player, contributing to two College Football Playoff National Championship victories in 2015 and 2017 with the Alabama Crimson Tide. He earned degrees in human performance and exercise science and public health.
Jennings’ professional journey began when he was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round (87th overall) of the 2020 NFL Draft. He made his NFL debut in September 2020 and subsequently started four games in his rookie season, recording 20 tackles. After missing the 2021 season due to injury, he returned in 2022, playing in 16 games with three starts and registering 27 tackles and 1.5 sacks. The 2023 season marked a turning point for Jennings, as he became a prominent starter, appearing in 15 games with 14 starts. He achieved a career-high 66 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 14 tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery, contributing significantly to the Patriots’ defense.
In the 2024 season, Jennings further solidified his role, playing and starting in 16 games as an outside linebacker. He set a new career high with 78 total tackles, including 2.5 sacks, and also recorded nine quarterback hits and a forced fumble. His consistent performance led to him being re-signed by the New England Patriots as an unrestricted free agent on March 14, 2024, with a three-year, $12 million contract extension. Jennings has been recognized for his contributions to community initiatives, such as participating in back-to-school sneaker and backpack giveaways for local youth and visiting Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
