Arda Turan, born on January 30, 1987, in Fatih, Istanbul, Turkey, is a distinguished figure in Turkish football, both as a player and now as a manager. His playing career was marked by exceptional ball control, dribbling skills, and vision, earning him recognition as one of the top young talents in the world. He rose through the Galatasaray youth system, making his senior debut in the 2004–05 season. After a loan spell at Manisaspor, he returned to Galatasaray and quickly established himself as a key player, eventually becoming captain in the 2009–10 season and wearing the coveted number 10 jersey. His impressive performances led to a significant transfer to Atlético Madrid in 2011, making him the most expensive Turkish footballer at the time.
At Atlético Madrid, Arda Turan continued to excel, playing a pivotal role in the team’s successes, including winning La Liga and the UEFA Europa League. His time in Spain further solidified his reputation as a top-tier midfielder, leading to a move to Barcelona in 2015. Although his debut with Barcelona was delayed due to a transfer ban, he contributed to their title wins. After a loan spell at İstanbul Başakşehir, where he also secured a Süper Lig title, he returned to Galatasaray in 2020. Turan officially announced his retirement from playing football in September 2022. He then transitioned into management, taking the helm at Eyüpspor in April 2023, where he quickly achieved promotion to the Süper Lig. In May 2025, he was appointed head coach of Ukrainian Premier League club Shakhtar Donetsk.
Throughout his career, Turan has been recognized for his talent, being ranked among the 100 best footballers in the world by The Guardian in 2014 and nominated for the UEFA Team of the Year. He also had a significant international career, earning 100 senior national caps for Turkey and scoring 17 goals. His impact on the field and his transition into a managerial role demonstrate his enduring dedication to football. Beyond his football contributions, Turan is also noted for his humanitarian work and has been a goodwill ambassador for the Khojaly massacre, advocating for peace and raising awareness.
