Anil Kapoor was born in Chembur, Bombay, India, on December 24, 1956, to film producer Surinder Kapoor. He grew up in a Punjabi Hindu family and is the second of four children, with elder brother Boney Kapoor and younger brother Sanjay Kapoor also involved in the film industry. Kapoor attended Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School in Chembur and later St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. His early exposure to Bollywood, influenced by his father’s work and his own admiration for actors like Raj Kapoor, steered him towards a career in acting. He initially attempted to join the Pune Film Institute but was unsuccessful, leading him to enroll in Roshan Taneja’s Acting school.
Kapoor’s acting journey began with a small role in the 1979 Hindi film ‘Hamare Tumhare’. He subsequently took on lead roles in the Telugu film ‘Vamsa Vruksham’ (1980) and the Kannada film ‘Pallavi Anupallavi’ (1983). His breakthrough in Hindi cinema came with the 1983 film ‘Woh 7 Din’, followed by significant acclaim for his performance in Yash Chopra’s 1984 action drama ‘Mashaal’, for which he won his first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Kapoor solidified his position as a leading actor with numerous successful films, including ‘Meri Jung’ (1985), ‘Karma’ (1986), ‘Mr. India’ (1987), ‘Tezaab’ (1988), ‘Ram Lakhan’ (1989), ‘Lamhe’ (1991), ‘Beta’ (1992), and ‘1942: A Love Story’ (1994).
His international career took off with his role as Prem Kumar in Danny Boyle’s 2008 Academy Award-winning film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, for which he shared a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Following this, he appeared in the eighth season of the American action series ’24’ in 2010, garnering positive reviews from the American press, and had a role in ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ (2011). Kapoor also ventured into production, with credits including ‘Gandhi, My Father’ (2007) and ‘Aisha’ (2010), and brought the Indian adaptation of ’24’ to television, starring in and producing the series from 2013 to 2016. He continues to appear in diverse roles in both Indian and international productions.
