Dewayne Perkins, born on November 5, 1990, in Chicago, Illinois, embarked on his career in comedy after receiving improv training at The Second City and working at iO Theater. He developed his comedic voice through musical theater and improv in high school, eventually pursuing stand-up. His early work included writing and performing “Black Side of the Moon” at Woolly Mammoth Theater in D.C. in 2016. Perkins gained significant recognition through the improv trio 3Peat, especially with their sketch “The Blackening,” which was released online by Comedy Central in 2018. This sketch later became the basis for a successful feature film.
Perkins transitioned into television writing, joining the staff for “The Break with Michelle Wolf” in 2018 and later relocating to Los Angeles to become a staff writer for “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” for its seventh season. He also contributed as a writer for “The Amber Ruffin Show,” earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series in 2021. His acting credits include appearances on “Wild ‘n Out,” “The Upshaws,” and “Saved by the Bell.” A significant career milestone is his co-writing and starring role in the horror-comedy film “The Blackening,” which premiered at TIFF in 2022 and grossed $17.7 million nationwide.
Looking ahead, Perkins is actively involved in several upcoming projects, showcasing his versatility as a writer and producer. He is set to write and executive produce “Chopped & Screwed” for ABC, a multi-camera sitcom centered on a Black barbershop and beauty salon. Additionally, he will executive produce and write an animated television series adaptation of “Clue” for Fox. In 2023, he signed with CAA, further solidifying his position in the entertainment industry.
