About

Born on April 26, 1961, in New York City, Anthony Cumia grew up in an Italian-American family on Long Island, New York. Prior to his radio career, Cumia worked installing heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. His interest in radio was sparked by New York City personalities like Howard Stern and Don Imus. His entry into radio began when he met Gregg “Opie” Hughes. Cumia and his brother Joe entered an O. J. Simpson song parody contest on Hughes’s “Nighttime Attitude” show on WBAB. Their submission, “Gonna Electric Shock OJ,” became a hit, leading to an invitation to perform live in September 1994 and Cumia’s subsequent contributions to comedy bits for Hughes.

This collaboration led to the formation of “Opie and Anthony,” which began broadcasting in March 1995 on WAAF in Boston, Massachusetts. After being fired from WAAF in April 1998 over an April Fool’s Day prank, the duo moved to WNEW in New York City, achieving a top 10 afternoon drive show within two years. Comedian Jim Norton joined the show as a co-host in 2001. The show gained national syndication but was canceled in August 2002 following a controversial segment. “Opie and Anthony” found a new home on XM Satellite Radio in October 2004, where they broadcast until 2014.

Following his departure from SiriusXM in 2014, Cumia launched “The Anthony Cumia Show” on his subscription-based network, Compound Media. This marked a significant career shift, embracing digital media and independent broadcasting. In 2017, he co-hosted “The Artie and Anthony Show” with Artie Lange, which later reverted to “The Anthony Cumia Show” with Dave Landau as co-host. In 2024, Compound Media merged with Gavin McInnes’s Censored.TV, renaming the platform Compound Censored. Cumia returned to traditional radio in February 2025, joining WABC’s Talkradio 77 with a weekly version of “The Anthony Cumia Show,” which was syndicated nationally in March 2025.
