Young NBA shooting guard Anthony Edwards has a pedigree few can match. After an incredible high school and collegiate career, he was the number one overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, being chosen by the Minnesota Timberwolves. During his first season, he became the third-youngest NBA player to ever score more than 40 points in a game.
Edwards was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 2001. As a child, he was initially more interested in playing American football but by ninth grade, he’d switched to basketball, mostly because “it looked more fun”. Even as an under-15 playing for a local team, he was being rated as a four-star recruit by experts, and by early 2019, he was regarded by the likes of ESPN, Rivals, and 247Sports as the top shooting guard recruit in the country, a top-five player, and a five-star prospect. He turned down offers from many major colleges and decided to stay in Georgia for his college career, becoming the Georgia Bulldog’s most highly-rated new player in recent decades. Within four months, he’d been named SEC Freshman of the Year and won the Freshman of the Week award a record four times. He also announced himself eligible for the 2020 NBA Draft, thereby calling time on his short but incredible college career.
Two days before Christmas 2020, Edwards made his NBA debut for the Minnesota Timberwolves after being the first player to be drafted. He quickly established himself as a major new NBA talent, with his 42-point game the following March being just one bit of proof of his enormous, and still developing talent.
