Anthony Michael Hall, born Michael Anthony Thomas Charles Hall on April 14, 1968, in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, began his acting career at age seven. His early work included commercials, notably as the Honeycomb cereal kid, and stage appearances, including the Lincoln Center Festival’s production of “St. Joan of the Microphone.” He made his screen debut in the Emmy Award-winning TV movie “The Gold Bug” in 1980, portraying a young Edgar Allan Poe. Hall gained initial notice with his role in the 1982 film “Six Pack.” His career gained significant momentum after he was cast as Rusty Griswold in “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983), a role that captured the attention of screenwriter John Hughes.
Hall’s defining period came with a series of collaborations with director John Hughes. He starred as “The Geek” in “Sixteen Candles” (1984), Brian Johnson in “The Breakfast Club” (1985), and Gary Wallace in “Weird Science” (1985). These roles cemented his image within the “Brat Pack” and as an iconic teenage actor of the decade. To avoid typecasting, Hall consciously diversified his roles, turning down parts in subsequent Hughes films like “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “Pretty in Pink.” He spent a year on “Saturday Night Live” (1985–1986), becoming the youngest cast member in the show’s history. Following a period of personal challenges, Hall returned to acting with a notable role as the antagonist Jim in Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands” (1990).
The late 1990s marked a career resurgence for Hall, particularly with his acclaimed portrayal of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates in the television movie “Pirates of Silicon Valley” (1999). This led to his starring role as Johnny Smith in the USA Network science fiction series “The Dead Zone” from 2002 to 2007, a significant run of 81 episodes where he also served as co-producer and director for an episode. More recently, Hall has taken on roles such as Mike Engel in “The Dark Knight” (2008), Tommy Doyle in “Halloween Kills” (2021), and Zachary Beck in “Reacher” (2025). He also develops film and television projects through his company, AMH Entertainment, and supports at-risk youth through the Anthony Michael Hall Literacy Club.
