Anil Gupta earned his doctorate in business strategy from Harvard Business School in 1980 with his thesis titled ‘The Process of Strategy Formation,’ establishing his foundational expertise in strategic management and global business. Prior to his doctoral studies, Gupta completed his Bachelor of Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur in 1970, followed by an M.B.A. from the Indian Institute of Management at Ahmedabad in 1972. Early in his career, he served as an Area Sales Manager and Product Manager at Hindustan Unilever from 1972 to 1975.
From 1979 to 1986, he held the position of Assistant Professor of Management Policy at Boston Universitys School of Management, where he was recognized with the Broderick Prize for Excellence in Research in 1984. In 1986, Gupta joined the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, ascending through various esteemed positions including Professor in 1992, the Ralph J. Tyser Professor in 2001, and the Michael D.
Gupta’s profound contributions to academia and management thinking have been recognized with numerous accolades. He received the Allen J. Krowe Award for Excellence in Teaching from the University of Maryland multiple times and was inducted into the Academy of Management Journals Hall of Fame.
