About

AFTV, originally known as ArsenalFanTV, was established in October 2012 by Robbie Lyle, a former BBC reggae radio host. Lyle’s vision was to create a fan-driven platform where ordinary Arsenal supporters could express their views, moving away from traditional sports punditry. He co-founded the channel with his cameraman, “Tao,” both of whom left their previous employment to dedicate themselves to this venture. The channel quickly gained traction, with its first fan interviews conducted after Arsenal’s 5–2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. AFTV film their interviews outside the Emirates Stadium after Arsenal’s home games, capturing raw fan reactions and opinions.

Over the years, AFTV has become a significant player in sports media, known for its unscripted fan interviews and passionate content. The channel’s rise in the YouTube community was fueled by numerous viral videos featuring intense fan rants, particularly during challenging periods for Arsenal. Notable instances include Chris Hudson’s outcry after a loss to Aston Villa in 2013 and Troopz’s impassioned reaction to Arsenal’s 5–1 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League in 2017. A substantial portion of the fan frustration captured on the channel was directed at former manager Arsène Wenger, especially during the 2016–17 season, highlighting a deep divide among the fanbase regarding his management. The channel also faced scrutiny for criticisms leveled at major shareholder Stan Kroenke, with fans expressing discontent over his perceived lack of commitment to the club’s trophy ambitions.

Demonstrating its growing influence, AFTV expanded its presence beyond YouTube. In April 2018, Channel 4 launched a late-night football show called _The Real Football Fan Show_, hosted by Robbie Lyle and featuring many AFTV regulars. Further solidifying his role in media, Lyle was the subject of an ITV documentary in March 2020, titled _Robbie Lyle: Football Fans Under Their Skin_, which explored issues of racism within football and the experiences of black football supporters. While achieving widespread recognition, AFTV experienced a name change in August 2018, rebranding to AFTV following discussions with Arsenal F.C. concerning the unauthorized use of the club’s name, demonstrating the channel’s evolution and adaptation within the media landscape.
