Asa Christian Newell was born on October 5, 2005, in Atlanta, Georgia. He spent part of his childhood in Athens, Georgia, before moving to Destin, Florida, at age ten. Newell began his high school basketball career at Choctawhatchee High School in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. During his sophomore year, he averaged 14.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game, earning the area Player of the Year award from the Northwest Florida Daily News. He later transferred to Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida, for his junior year, where he continued to develop his basketball skills. Newell was recognized as a consensus five-star recruit in the class of 2024 by major recruiting services, underscoring his potential in the sport.
Newell committed to playing college basketball for the Georgia Bulldogs on October 25, 2023, after considering offers from programs including Texas, Alabama, and Gonzaga. He signed his National Letter of Intent on November 8, 2023. In his collegiate debut on November 4, 2024, Newell recorded 26 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks in a win against Tennessee Tech. He concluded his freshman season averaging 15.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.0 block in 29.0 minutes per game, which earned him a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team. Following this performance, he declared for the 2025 NBA draft.
On June 25, 2025, Newell was drafted 23rd overall by the New Orleans Pelicans in the 2025 NBA draft. He was subsequently traded to his hometown team, the Atlanta Hawks, alongside a future unprotected first-round pick, in exchange for the draft rights to Derik Queen. Newell has also represented the United States internationally, playing for the U17 team at the 2022 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup and for the U19 team at the 2023 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup, where he was named Defensive MVP.
