Baratunde Rafiq Thurston was born on September 11, 1977, in Washington, D.C. He was raised in the Columbia Heights neighborhood before moving to a suburban area in Maryland during junior high. Thurston attended Sidwell Friends School and later graduated from Harvard University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. His early career included roles as an associate at Cambridge Strategic Management Group and the Management Network Group from 1999 to 2003, followed by work as a contract senior consultant for Altman Vilandrie & Company and a contract producer and advisor for Untravel Media.
In 2006, Thurston co-founded the black political blog Jack & Jill Politics, whose coverage of the 2008 Democratic National Convention was archived in the Library of Congress. He served as the Director of Digital for The Onion from 2007 to May 2012. In 2012, his book “How to Be Black” became a New York Times bestseller. He has also contributed to the Huffington Post and the Weekly Dig, and was a semi-regular panelist on the podcast “This Week in Tech.” Thurston hosted “Popular Science’s Future Of” television show on the Science Channel in 2009 and 2010. In May 2011, he spoke at the presidential palace in Tbilisi, Georgia, on the role of satire in democracy and has advised The White House on digital strategy.
From 2012 to 2015, Thurston co-founded the comedy/technology startup Cultivated Wit, where he also served as CEO. In August 2015, he was named supervising producer for “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah,” overseeing original digital content, a role for which he received an Emmy nomination. He joined the MIT Media Lab as a director’s fellow in January 2012. Thurston launched his podcast “We’re Having A Moment” in June 2020 and began hosting the six-part travelogue series “America Outdoors” on PBS in July 2022. He is also the author of three other books: “Better than Crying” (2004), “Keep Jerry Falwell Away from My Oreo Cookies” (2005), and “Thank You Congressional Pages (For Being So Damn Sexy!)” (2006).
