Barbara Lee Niven, born Barbara Lee Bucholz on February 26, 1953, in Portland, Oregon, developed an early interest in acting. Despite initially facing challenges and working in various fields including export coordination and real estate, Niven remained committed to her aspirations. After being told she lacked “star quality” during an audition for “One Life to Live,” she dedicated herself to improving her craft and voice. Her perseverance led to her first significant role in Hallmark Hall of Fame’s 1986 film “Promise,” which earned her a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) card and marked the beginning of her professional acting career. Following this, she relocated to Los Angeles with her daughter, further pursuing her passion.
Over her career, Niven established a diverse filmography, appearing in over 150 TV and movie roles. She gained recognition for her roles in soap operas such as “The Bold and the Beautiful” and “One Life to Live,” and as a series regular on “Pensacola: Wings of Gold” (1998-2000). She also featured in a variety of television series including “ER,” “Cold Case,” “NCIS,” “Charmed,” and “Parks and Recreation.” Her film credits include “The Rat Pack” (1998), where she portrayed Marilyn Monroe, “A Perfect Ending” (2012) in a leading role, and the horror comedy “Suburban Gothic” (2014). Niven has also been a prominent figure in Hallmark and Lifetime movies, participating in numerous productions across both networks.
Beyond acting, Niven has expanded her career into motivational speaking and media training, sharing her experiences and insights on fulfilling dreams. She developed the “Unleash Your Star Power!” system, focusing on public speaking and video marketing. Additionally, Niven is a dedicated animal rights activist and a National Ambassador for American Humane, passionately advocating for animal welfare. She openly shares her personal struggles, including a long battle with bulimia, to inspire and support others.
