Benjamin Edward Meara Stiller was born on November 30, 1965, in New York City, New York, to comedians Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. Growing up, Stiller was exposed to the entertainment industry and developed an early interest in filmmaking, shooting Super 8 films with his sister Amy. He later enrolled as a film student at UCLA but left after nine months to pursue acting. His early career included working in theatre, such as a role in the 1986 Broadway revival of “The House of Blue Leaves.” This period also saw him create satirical short films, one of which caught the attention of “Saturday Night Live.” After a brief stint as a writer and featured performer on “Saturday Night Live” in 1989, Stiller returned to creating his own content.
Stiller’s diverse career includes significant work as both an actor and director. He gained recognition for creating and starring in “The Ben Stiller Show,” which aired on MTV in 1990 and later on Fox in 1992, earning him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Program. His directorial debut came with the 1994 film “Reality Bites,” which became a cult classic. This was followed by directing “The Cable Guy” (1996), and starring in the highly successful comedy “There’s Something About Mary” (1998). Stiller further solidified his mainstream presence with leading roles in films like “Meet the Parents” (2000), which grossed over $330 million worldwide, and “Zoolander” (2001), which he also directed.
Beyond acting, Stiller has continued to direct and produce, demonstrating a shift towards television in recent years. Notable directorial projects include the critically acclaimed Showtime limited series “Escape at Dannemora” (2018), which garnered him a Directors Guild of America Award, and the Apple TV+ series “Severance” (2022). “Severance” has received multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his work as director and executive producer. Stiller has appeared in numerous other successful comedies such as “Along Came Polly” (2004), “Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story” (2004), and the “Night at the Museum” film series. He also launched Stiller’s Soda in 2025, expanding his entrepreneurial ventures.
