Benedict Wong was born on July 3, 1971, in Eccles, England, to parents who had immigrated from Hong Kong. He grew up in Salford and pursued a two-year performing arts course at Salford City College. Wong began his career on stage and gained early recognition for his role as Guo Yi in the 2002 film “Dirty Pretty Things,” which earned him a British Independent Film Award nomination. Concurrently, he appeared as Errol Spears in the BBC sitcom “15 Storeys High” from 2002 to 2004, establishing his presence in British acting circles.
Wong’s career progressed through notable film roles such as Trey in “Sunshine” (2007) and Thompson in “Moon” (2009). A significant turning point came in the 2010s with his portrayal of Kublai Khan in the Netflix series “Marco Polo” (2014–2016), which brought him international attention. He further solidified his global recognition by joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Wong, beginning with “Doctor Strange” in 2016. This role has continued across multiple blockbuster films and television series, making him a recognizable figure worldwide. His performance as Bruce Ng in Ridley Scott’s “The Martian” (2015) also highlighted his capacity for roles in major Hollywood productions.
More recently, Wong has continued to diversify his portfolio, including a main role as Da Shi in the Netflix series “3 Body Problem” (2024), which has been well-received. He has also lent his voice to animated features such as “Raya and the Last Dragon” (2021) and “The Magician’s Elephant” (2023).
