Wilder’s foundational expertise in football program development began after earning a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from the University of Maine in 1987 and a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Boston College in 1990, following his role as a graduate assistant under Jack Bicknell. He further honed his skills during 16 years at his alma mater, the University of Maine, serving in various coaching capacities from 1990 to 2006, including associate head coach and offensive coordinator. Under his leadership at Old Dominion, the Monarchs also ranked fifth nationally in FCS attendance in 2009. Wilder continued to build the Old Dominion program, guiding the team to an impressive 26-7 record over his first three seasons and overseeing their critical transition from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
The Golden Eagles also demonstrated strong defensive prowess, ranking highly nationally in key categories such as rushing defense, blocked punts, and team tackles for loss, underscoring Wilders consistent ability to elevate collegiate football programs.
