From a background in music and acting, Bobi Wine has transitioned into a prominent Ugandan activist and political leader, advocating for social change and democratic reform. After earning a diploma in Music, Dance, and Drama from Makerere University in 2003, Bobi Wine quickly established himself as a prominent figure in the Ugandan music scene. Adopting the stage name Bobi Wine, his early singles, including ‘Akagoma,’ ‘Funtula,’ and ‘Sunda’ in the early 2000s, brought him widespread success. His distinctive musical style, a fusion of kidandali, reggae, dancehall, and afrobeat, often carried socially conscious messages, leading to his popular moniker, ‘Ghetto President,’ reflecting his commitment to addressing the concerns of Kampala’s underprivileged residents through ‘edutainment.’ Wine expanded his entertainment career into film and television, starring in Ugandan movies such as ‘Yogera’ (2010), ‘Situka’ (2015), and ‘Divizionz.’ He also launched his own reality TV show, ‘The Ghetto President.’ A significant milestone in his musical career saw his song ‘Kiwani’ featured in the Disney movie ‘Queen of Katwe’ (2016).
His impactful political journey, including his presidential campaign, was chronicled in the critically acclaimed documentary ‘Bobi Wine: The People’s President’ (2022), which garnered an Oscar nomination and received a prestigious Peabody Award in 2024. Further demonstrating his dedication to advocacy and education, Wine obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree from Cavendish University in August 2024. He has also served as a parenting ambassador for Twaweza (2013) and an ambassador for Save the Children’s EVERY ONE campaign (2014), highlighting his consistent engagement in social advocacy.
