John Wesley “Boog” Powell is a celebrated former professional baseball player who made a significant impact in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a first baseman and left fielder from 1961 to 1977. Most notably, he was a key player for the Baltimore Orioles during their dynasty years, contributing to four American League pennants and two World Series championships between 1966 and 1971. Powell’s exceptional performance earned him four All-Star selections and the American League Most Valuable Player Award in 1970, showcasing his prowess with a .606 slugging percentage in 1964 and a career-high 39 home runs that same year.
Powell began his professional journey after signing with the Baltimore Orioles as an amateur free agent in 1959.
