United States Brad Guzan has transitioned from a decorated goalkeeper in MLS and the English Premier League to a respected figure in the soccer community, recently retiring after a 21-year career.

Brad Guzan was born on September 9, 1984, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, and pursued his early soccer career playing for the Chicago Magic Soccer Club and later for Providence Catholic High School. He went on to play two seasons of college soccer at the University of South Carolina, where he earned second-team All-American honors in his sophomore year. In 2005, Guzan decided to forgo his remaining college eligibility, signing a Generation Adidas contract and entering Major League Soccer. He was subsequently drafted by Chivas USA as the second overall pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft, marking the beginning of his professional journey.
During his time at Chivas USA from 2005 to 2008, Guzan made 78 starts and led the club to the playoffs three times. His exceptional performance earned him the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award in 2007 and a spot on the MLS Best XI. This success in MLS attracted international attention, leading to his transfer to the English Premier League club Aston Villa in July 2008 for a fee of $1 million. He spent eight seasons with Aston Villa, where he made 144 appearances in the top flight of English football and a total of 171 appearances across all competitions. Notably, he was named Aston Villa Player of the Year in the 2012–13 season, a testament to his consistent contributions.
After a brief spell with Middlesbrough in the 2016-17 season, Guzan returned to MLS in July 2017 to join expansion side Atlanta United. He quickly became a pivotal player for the club, making 261 appearances across all competitions and 224 in MLS regular season play, both club records. He secured 61 clean sheets in regular season matches, also a club record. Guzan played a crucial role in Atlanta United’s MLS Cup victory in 2018 and their U.S. Open Cup and Campeones Cup wins in 2019. He was also a two-time MLS All-Star in 2018 and 2019. Internationally, Guzan represented the United States Men’s National Team 64 times, participating in two FIFA World Cups and winning the CONCACAF Gold Cup three times (2007, 2017, 2021). He announced his retirement from professional soccer at the end of the 2025 season.
