Following an extensive career as an assistant coach, contributing to three Big Ten championship teams (1997, 1998, 2000) and a national championship with the University of Michigan in 1997, Brady Hoke accepted his first head coaching position at Ball State University in December 2002. He significantly revitalized the program, culminating in a 12-1 record in 2008, the school’s first-ever appearance in national polls, and earning him Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year and AFCA Football Bowl Subdivision Region 3 Coach of the Year honors that year. This success led to his appointment as head coach for San Diego State in 2009, where he led the Aztecs to a 9-4 record and a ‘Poinsettia Bowl’ victory in 2010, securing his first Mountain West Coach of the Year award. Hoke’s impact continued as he was named Head Coach at the University of Michigan in 2011, guiding the Wolverines to an 11-2 record and a triumph in the 2012 ‘Sugar Bowl’ during his inaugural season.
In 2019, Hoke returned to San Diego State as Defensive Line Coach and was subsequently named head coach for his second stint in January 2020. Under his renewed leadership, the Aztecs achieved a remarkable 12-2 record in 2021, reached a No. 25 national ranking, and secured a ‘Tropical Smoothie Frisco Bowl’ victory. His exceptional coaching during this period earned him his second Mountain West Coach of the Year award in 2021.
Brady Hoke announced his retirement at the end of the 2023 season, concluding a distinguished 36-year coaching career marked by significant team turnarounds and numerous individual and team accolades across collegiate and professional football.
