Dane Brekken Shea, born on February 28, 1990, in College Station, Texas, embarked on his professional soccer career immediately after high school, bypassing college soccer. He was a second-round draft pick by FC Dallas in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, signing a Generation Adidas contract. During his initial years with FC Dallas from 2008 to 2012, Shea demonstrated his versatility by playing various roles, including striker, central midfielder, and defender, before settling into a left winger position. His early career highlights include being named to the 2011 MLS Best XI and receiving 2011 MLS All-Star honors, having appeared in 103 games and scoring 19 goals for the club. He made significant contributions to FC Dallas’s playoff runs in 2010 and 2011.
In January 2013, Shea moved to England, joining Premier League club Stoke City for a reported fee of £2.5 million. Although his time at Stoke City involved loan spells at Barnsley and Birmingham City in the Football League Championship, he continued to gain international experience. He returned to Major League Soccer in December 2014, signing with Orlando City SC for their inaugural MLS season in 2015. Shea played 46 league matches for Orlando City SC over two seasons, scoring three goals, and continued to showcase his flexibility by routinely playing as a left-back and left-winger. His career also included stints with Vancouver Whitecaps FC from 2017 to 2018, where he appeared in 56 games, and Atlanta United FC in 2019, contributing to their U.S. Open Cup championship.
Shea joined Inter Miami CF in June 2020, where he accumulated 47 appearances and scored 6 goals until 2022. He also played one game for Inter Miami CF II in MLS Next Pro. Throughout his extensive career, Shea has been a member of the United States Men’s National Team, representing his country at various levels. He won the 2013 Concacaf Gold Cup, scoring the winning goal in the final. Shea officially announced his retirement from professional soccer in May 2023, concluding a career marked by significant club achievements and international representation.
