Byron Mann is recognisable to millions for roles such as Ryu in Street Fighter, Chang in season five of Hell on Wheels, Uncle Six in Wu Assassins, Mr Chau in The Big Short, and many others. He provided the voice and motion capture for General Tian Zhao in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, a game so successful that it grossed $500 million within 24 hours of its release back in 2012. His most recent work includes playing Vince Tran in the second season of CBS’s Blood & Treasure and Xander in the forthcoming Netflix spy series, The Recruit.
Mann was born in Hong Kong and is fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. He relocated to California after graduation. By that point, he’d also gained a lot of experience in community theatre as an actor and writer, but he chose to pursue law studies instead, eventually passing the California bar. However, he decided to commit to acting and, after a few appearances, got his major break when he played Ryu in the 1994 movie Street Fighter. The film starred Jean-Claude Van Damme and was based on the iconic arcade game. It was a box office hit, grossing just under $100 million.
For the first few years of his career, Mann focused on films and the occasional TV appearance. He got his first recurring small-screen role in 2000 when he played Detective Matt Sung in the acclaimed sci-fi drama Dark Angels. From 2012 to 2019, he played Yao Fe Gulong in the superhero series Arrow. He has since played many other recurring roles in shows such as Blood & Water, Little Fires Everywhere, and Wu Assassins.
