Caitriona Balfe was born in Dublin, Ireland, on October 4, 1979, and grew up in the village of Tydavnet, County Monaghan. Her career began at the age of 19 when she was scouted by an agent while collecting money for charity. She quickly rose in the fashion industry, working with top brands such as Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, DKNY, Burberry, Dior, H&M, Marc Jacobs, Valentino, Cacharel, Roberto Cavalli, Givenchy, Hugo Boss, Armani, Dries van Noten, and Calvin Klein. Balfe also graced the covers of prestigious magazines like Vogue and Elle. Despite her modeling success, she continued to pursue her passion for acting, which she had studied at the Dublin Institute of Technology.
In 2009, after a decade as a high-demand model, Balfe shifted her focus entirely to acting, moving to Los Angeles to dedicate herself to acting classes. Her early acting career included a small part in the 2006 film “The Devil Wears Prada” (uncredited) and later significant roles in films like “Super 8” (2011), “Now You See Me” (2013), and “Escape Plan” (2013). A turning point in her career came in 2014 when she secured the lead role of Claire Fraser in the Starz television series “Outlander,” which garnered her critical acclaim and multiple award nominations, including four Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama. She also became an executive producer for “Outlander” in 2020.
Balfe’s film career continued to grow with roles in “Money Monster” (2016) alongside George Clooney and Julia Roberts, and “Ford v Ferrari” (2019) with Christian Bale and Matt Damon. Her performance in Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical film “Belfast” (2021) received widespread critical acclaim, earning her nominations for a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award, Critics’ Choice Movie Award, and a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress. She has also contributed her voice talents to animated projects such as “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” (2019). Balfe continues to engage in upcoming projects like “The Amateur” (2025), “Tenzing” (TBA), and an adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility” (TBA) and has been a member of the Actors Branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since June 2022.
