Camila Giorgi, born on December 30, 1991, in Macerata, Italy, developed an early interest in tennis, beginning her rigorous training at age five under the guidance of her father, Sergio Giorgi. Her mother, Claudia Gabriella Fullone, is a fashion designer who also created Giorgi’s on-court attire. Giorgi’s talent was recognized early, with 1976 French Open champion Adriano Panatta noting her aggressive playing style at a young age. In 2000, tennis coach Nick Bollettieri offered her seven months of specialized training, a rare opportunity previously extended only to Maria Sharapova.
Giorgi turned professional in 2006, steadily progressing through the ITF circuit before making her Grand Slam main-draw debut at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships. A turning point in her career came at the 2012 Wimbledon Championships, where she reached the fourth round in only her second appearance, leading to her debut in the WTA top 100 rankings. She continued to achieve significant milestones, including reaching the fourth round of the US Open in 2013 and her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the 2018 Wimbledon Championships. Her aggressive style, characterized by powerful, flat groundstrokes and a strong two-handed backhand, became her signature.
Her career highlights include winning her maiden WTA Tour title at the 2015 Topshelf Open and the biggest title of her career, a WTA 1000, at the 2021 National Bank Open in Montreal, where she defeated former world No. 1 Karolína Plíšková. This victory propelled her back into the top 40. She continued her strong performance in 2022, reaching the French Open fourth round and returning to the top 30. In 2023, she secured her fourth WTA Tour title at the Mérida Open. Giorgi retired from professional tennis in May 2024, concluding a notable career marked by competitive spirit and distinctive play on the court.
