Candice Accola was born Candice Rene Accola on May 13, 1987, in Houston, Texas. Her mother, Carolyn Clark Accola, was an environmental engineer before becoming a homemaker, and her father, Kevin Accola, is a cardiothoracic surgeon. She grew up in Edgewood, Florida, and attended Lake Highland Preparatory School. Accola initially pursued a career in music. In December 2006, she independently released her debut album, “It’s Always the Innocent Ones,” in the United States. She co-wrote 12 of the 14 tracks on the album. The album was re-released in Japan in 2008 and achieved increased success. Accola also toured as a backing singer for Miley Cyrus’s Best of Both Worlds Tour and appeared as herself in the 2008 3D concert film “Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert.”
Accola transitioned into acting, making guest appearances in television series such as “How I Met Your Mother,” “Supernatural,” and “Drop Dead Diva.” In July 2009, she starred in the independent horror film “Deadgirl,” portraying JoAnn. That same year, she had a minor role in “The Hannah Montana Movie.” A significant turning point in her career came in 2009 when she was cast as Caroline Forbes in The CW’s supernatural drama series “The Vampire Diaries.” The series premiere garnered 4.91 million viewers, and Accola’s portrayal of Caroline Forbes received positive reception from critics and fans throughout the show’s run from 2009 to 2017. For her performance, she received multiple awards, including two Teen Choice Awards.
In June 2012, Accola took on the role of Chloe Cunningham in the web series “Dating Rules From My Future Self,” a series that accumulated over 14 million views. She also served as a producer for two episodes of this series. Following her time on “The Vampire Diaries,” she reprised her role as Caroline Forbes in the spin-off series “The Originals” in 2018 for five episodes and again in “Legacies” in 2021-2022 for two episodes. In 2019, she appeared in “The Orville” as Solana Kitan. In 2020, Accola starred as Kimberly in the romance sequel film “After We Collided.” Her television film credits include “Christmas in Tune” (2021) as Belle and “Suitcase Killer: The Melanie McGuire Story” (2022) as Melanie McGuire. She is slated to appear in “We Were Liars” (2025) as Bess Sinclair. Off-screen, Accola is a supporter of the It Gets Better Project, which focuses on preventing suicide among LGBT youth.
