Carli Lloyd was born on August 6, 1989, in Fallbrook, California, and grew up in Bonsall, California. She began playing volleyball in the sixth grade in 2000, starting with Vintage Volleyball Club and later with Epic Volleyball Club. She attended Fallbrook High School and continued her education at the University of California-Berkeley, where she studied Social Welfare and graduated in July 2011. Her collegiate career was highly successful, culminating in being named the AVCA Division I Player of the Year in 2010 after leading the University of California-Berkeley to a runner-up finish in the NCAA Division I Women’s National Championship. She also earned three AVCA All-America honors during her time at Cal, becoming only the second player in the school’s history to achieve this.
Lloyd’s professional career began in January 2011 when she joined the U.S. Women’s National Team. Her international debut was at the 2011 Pan American Games, where she helped the U.S. secure a bronze medal. Over the years, she played for various international clubs, including Yamamay Busto Arsizio, Prosecco Doc-Imoco Conegliano, Lokomotiv Baku, Pomì Casalmaggiore, Hinode Barueri, Dentil Praia Clube, Eczacıbaşı VitrA, and Athletes Unlimited Pro Volleyball. A significant milestone was her participation in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where she earned a bronze medal as part of the U.S. Women’s National Team. Her contributions were recognized with the title of USA Volleyball Female Indoor Player of the Year in 2017.
Throughout her career, Carli Lloyd has consistently demonstrated exceptional performance as a setter. She was named the Most Valuable Player at the 2015 Pan American Games and was the leading setter in running set average at 6.27 per set, leading Team USA to a gold medal. Her leadership also guided Team USA to gold at the FIVB Volleyball Nations League. Currently, she is a setter for LOVB Austin, continuing to contribute her skills and experience to the sport. Her uncle, Galen Tomlinson, who was known as Turbo in the 1980s television series American Gladiator, was a significant mentor in her early volleyball and track and field training, especially after the passing of her father when she was four years old.
