Caster Semenya

Caster Semenya, born in 1991 in South Africa, is a highly accomplished middle-distance runner. She rose to international prominence with her exceptional talent in the 800m event. Semenya became a two-time Olympic champion, securing gold medals in the women’s 800m, and is also a three-time 800m world champion. Her dominance in the event is further highlighted by her double Commonwealth Games middle distance gold medals. Throughout her career, Semenya has demonstrated consistent success, famously achieving her 30th consecutive victory over the 800m distance at the Doha Diamond League in May 2019, showcasing her consistent high-level performance.

Semenya’s career has also been marked by significant challenges related to her natural biological differences. In 2009, prior to the women’s 800m World Championship final, global athletics bodies requested gender verification testing. Despite winning gold in that final, she was subsequently prevented from competing for approximately a year. From 2011 onward, she has been involved in extensive legal proceedings concerning regulations that restrict female athletes with elevated testosterone levels. These regulations, established by World Athletics (formerly the IAAF), require athletes with differences of sexual development (DSD) to take testosterone-reducing medication to compete in track events ranging from 400m to the mile. Semenya has consistently challenged these regulations, viewing them as an infringement on her human rights.

In March 2020, Semenya announced her intention to compete in the 200m event, shifting her focus from her primary 800m race due to the ongoing restrictions. This decision underlined her determination to continue competing at the highest level despite ongoing barriers. Her remarkable athletic ability was evident in 2016 when she won the 400m, 800m, and 1500m events within three hours at the South African National Championships. Beyond her athletic pursuits, Semenya has become a prominent voice advocating for fairness, inclusivity, and diversity in sports, particularly for athletes with DSD, ensuring that future generations of athletes are treated equitably.
