Born Catherine Mary Nursall on April 22, 1959, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Catherine Mary Stewart began her journey in the performing arts studying dance, acting, and singing in London. Her professional acting debut came in 1980 with a leading role in the rock musical “The Apple,” which opened the Montreal World Film Festival that year. This initial success provided a foundation for her career, which soon led her to Los Angeles in 1981.
Upon relocating to Los Angeles, Stewart secured a contract role on the popular daytime soap opera “Days of Our Lives,” where she originated the character of Kayla Brady from 1982 to 1983. Her transition to film soon followed, with significant roles in prominent science fiction films of 1984, including Maggie Gordon in “The Last Starfighter” and Regina Belmont in the cult classic “Night of the Comet.” She continued to build her filmography with roles in the teen comedy “Mischief” (1985) and as Gwen Saunders in the comedy “Weekend at Bernie’s” (1989). Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Stewart also appeared in television miniseries such as “Hollywood Wives” (1985) and “Sins” (1986), where she portrayed a younger version of Joan Collins’ character. Her television work further included guest appearances on shows like “Knight Rider,” “Hotel,” and “Alfred Hitchcock Presents.”
In later years, Stewart balanced her career with family life. After a period of reduced activity focusing on her children, she returned to more active roles in film and television, including a directorial debut with the short film “A Walk to Remember” in 2016. She has continued to engage with her audience through diverse projects, including recent roles in Hallmark holiday movies like “Rock N’ Roll Christmas” (2019) and “A Christmas Comeback” (2020), as well as an appearance in “Law & Order” (2023). Beyond acting, she contributed voice work as Moira in the video game “Red Dead Redemption II” (2018).
