Kapil Sharma, born Kapil Punj on April 2, 1981, in Amritsar, Punjab, India, started his career in entertainment as a stand-up comedian. His early work included the Punjabi show Hasde Hasaande Ravo on MH One. Sharma rose to national prominence after winning the third season of the stand-up comedy reality show, “The Great Indian Laughter Challenge” in 2007, earning a significant cash prize. This victory marked a turning point, propelling him into the mainstream Indian entertainment industry. He further honed his comedic skills by winning six seasons of the competitive show “Comedy Circus” and was a contestant on “Ustaadon Ka Ustaad” in 2008. In 2011, he explored his musical talent as a contestant on Zee TV’s singing reality show “Star Ya Rockstar,” finishing as the second runner-up.
In 2013, Sharma launched his production banner, K9 Productions, and created his own show, “Comedy Nights with Kapil,” on Colors TV, where he starred as the host, Bittu Sharma. This highly successful show led him to host other programs, including “Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 6” and “Chhote Miyan.” His growing influence was recognized when he received the Entertainer of the Year award at the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year awards in 2013 and was appointed Brand Ambassador by the Delhi Election Commission during the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections. Sharma made his Bollywood acting debut as the male lead in the romantic-comedy film “Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon” in 2015, which achieved record-breaking opening day business for a debut film. He continued his film career with roles in “Firangi” (2017) and “Zwigato” (2023), and also lent his voice to the Hindi dub of “The Angry Birds Movie 2” (2019).
After “Comedy Nights with Kapil” concluded in 2016, Sharma launched “The Kapil Sharma Show” on Sony Entertainment Television, which also garnered significant viewership. His career has seen various projects, including the kids’ comedy show “The Honey Bunny Show With Kapil Sharma” (2020) and a Netflix collaboration for “The Great Indian Kapil Show” (2024–present). Beyond his broadcast work, Sharma performs live stand-up comedy both domestically and internationally. He is also known for his activism, promoting animal rights through a PETA campaign and participating in the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission), for which he was invited to the Rashtrapati Bhavan by President Pranab Mukherjee in 2015.
