Cedric Antonio Kyles, known professionally as Cedric The Entertainer, was born on April 24, 1964, in Jefferson City, Missouri. He was raised in Caruthersville, Missouri, and later moved to Berkeley, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. He pursued higher education at Southeast Missouri State University, where he majored in mass communication. Before establishing his career in entertainment, Cedric held positions as a State Farm insurance claims adjuster and a substitute high school teacher, demonstrating a diverse professional background prior to his comedic and acting endeavors.
Cedric’s career in entertainment began to flourish in the 1990s. He gained early recognition by hosting BET’s “ComicView” during the 1993–1994 season and “Def Comedy Jam” in 1995. A significant turning point in his acting career came in 1995 when he secured his first role as The Cowardly Lion in the Apollo Theater Revival of “The Wiz.” This led to a prominent role co-starring with Steve Harvey on The WB sitcom “The Steve Harvey Show,” where he played Cedric Jackie Robinson. His comedic talent was further cemented as one of “The Original Kings of Comedy,” a group that later became the subject of a Spike Lee film. Throughout his career, Cedric has also lent his voice to animated features including the “Madagascar” film series, “Ice Age,” and “Planes.”
In addition to his acting and comedic work, Cedric has taken on various roles behind the scenes as a producer and writer. He created and starred in his own sketch comedy show, “Cedric the Entertainer Presents,” and was an executive producer for “The Soul Man,” a TV Land original series that aired from 2012 to 2016. He also hosted the 12th season of the daytime version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” from 2013 to 2014. More recently, he has starred as Calvin Butler in the CBS sitcom “The Neighborhood” since 2018, where he also serves as an executive producer. In 2019, his contributions to entertainment were honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognizing his sustained impact and versatility in the industry.
