Chad Coleman

Chad L. Coleman was born on September 6, 1967, in Richmond, Virginia. His early life involved time in foster care and being raised by his grandmother. A leg injury shifted his focus from track and field to drama. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University on a scholarship before serving in the United States Army from 1985 to 1989 as a video cameraman. This foundational experience in the Army preceded his entry into the acting profession, where he would later achieve recognition for his work across various mediums.

Coleman’s career includes significant roles in well-known television series. He portrayed Dennis ‘Cutty’ Wise in the HBO series ‘The Wire’ from 2004 to 2008, a role that gained him considerable attention. Following this, he took on the character of Tyreese on AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead’, appearing from 2012 to 2015. His work on ‘The Expanse’ as Fred Johnson from 2015 to 2020 further established his presence in science fiction. In addition to live-action roles, Coleman provided the voice for Coach in the video game ‘Left 4 Dead 2’ in 2009, showcasing his range as a performer. He has also had recurring roles in ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ as Z and Klyden in ‘The Orville’ from 2017 to 2022.
