Charles Shaughnessy

Charles George Patrick Shaughnessy was born on February 9, 1955, in London, England, into a family with established ties to the entertainment industry. His father, Alfred Shaughnessy, was a principal writer for the London Weekend Television/ITV series “Upstairs, Downstairs,” and his mother, Jean Lodge, was an actress. Shaughnessy began performing in plays during his primary school years. He pursued higher education at Eton College and later read law at Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he was also a member of the Footlights comedy revue. Following his graduation from Cambridge, he made the decision to return to acting, enrolling in a London drama school and subsequently touring with a repertory company. His move to America marked a significant turning point in his career.

Shaughnessy gained widespread recognition for his role as Shane Donovan on the soap opera “Days of Our Lives” from 1984 to 1992. His portrayal contributed to the character’s romance with Kimberly Brady, establishing them as a prominent supercouple and attracting a younger audience to the show. He later starred as Maxwell Sheffield in the CBS sitcom “The Nanny” from 1993 to 1999, appearing in 146 episodes. During this period, he also lent his voice to Dennis the Goldfish in the animated series “Stanley,” a role for which he earned a Daytime Emmy Award in 2002. His career has also included recurring roles as Christopher Plover on “The Magicians” (2016–2020) and St. John Powell on “Mad Men” (2008–2009).

Throughout his career, Shaughnessy has demonstrated versatility across various genres and platforms. He has appeared in TV movies such as “A Kiss So Deadly” (1996) and “Mom’s Got a Date with a Vampire” (2000), and made guest appearances in popular shows like “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “The Mentalist,” and “Modern Family.” He has also contributed voice work to video games, including “Freelancer” (2003) and “Saints Row 2” (2008). In addition to his screen work, Shaughnessy has performed in theatrical productions, notably playing King Arthur in “Monty Python’s Spamalot!” (2010), for which he won a Broadway World Boston Theater Award. He later took on the role of Henry Higgins in “My Fair Lady” (2011). He maintains a consistent presence in television, returning to “Days of Our Lives” for various storylines and joining ABC’s “General Hospital” as the villain Victor Cassadine (2021–2023).
