About

Charlton “Charlie” Brooker was born on March 3, 1971, in Reading, Berkshire, and raised in Brightwell-cum-Sotwell, Oxfordshire. His early career began in the late 1980s as a writer and cartoonist for the comic ‘Oink!’. He later pursued a BA in Media Studies at the Polytechnic of Central London, where his unconventional dissertation on video games contributed to his non-graduation. Brooker’s comedic influences include figures like Monty Python and Chris Morris. From 1999 to 2000, he appeared as ‘the Pundit’ in ‘Games Republic’ on BSkyB and co-hosted ‘The Kit’ on BBC Knowledge, reviewing gadgets and technology. In 2000, he joined “The 11 O’Clock Show” as a writer for Channel 4, and in 2001, he contributed to the “Brass Eye” special. His early work also includes writing for Channel 4’s ‘The Art Show’ in 2003 with an animated episode titled “How to Watch Television.”

Milestones in his writing career include co-writing the sitcom ‘Nathan Barley’ in 2005 with Chris Morris and joining the writing team for Channel 4’s sketch show ‘Spoons’ in the same year. In 2006, Brooker began his notable ‘Wipe’ series with ‘Charlie Brooker’s Screenwipe’ on BBC Four, a program reviewing television that mirrored his “Screen Burn” columns in The Guardian. This series gained a terrestrial primetime repeat on BBC Two by 2009. Expanding on this format, he launched ‘Newswipe with Charlie Brooker’ in 2009, which focused on international news media, and ‘Gameswipe’ that same year, dedicated to video games.

A significant career turning point was the creation of ‘Black Mirror’, a science fiction anthology series that first aired on Channel 4 in December 2011 to positive reviews. Brooker wrote the first episode and co-wrote the second with his wife, Konnie Huq, also writing all episodes for the second series. In September 2015, Netflix acquired the rights, commissioning a third season of 12 episodes, which was later released as two series of six episodes in October 2016. He continued to write a majority of these episodes, further solidifying the series’ global impact. His production company, Zeppotron, produces ‘Black Mirror’. Brooker has won multiple awards, including Primetime Emmys for ‘Black Mirror’ for Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Writing, and has received recognition for his journalistic work, including Columnist of the Year at the British Press Awards in 2009 for his work with The Guardian.
